Treatment of ankle fractures in low-income countries (LICs)
We are very pleased to announce the third AO Alliance Foundation (AOAF) webinar, which will be held on 24 October 2016. This webinar, dedicated to the treatment of ankle fractures in low-income countries (LICs), has been developed in collaboration with orthopedic trauma surgeons practicing in those environments.
Trauma is an immense global burden, but more so in LICs. Although continuing medical education courses for fracture treatment can improve the delivery of musculoskeletal trauma care, the development and delivery of such education must meet the realities of LICs.
The incidence of ankle fractures and fracture-dislocations present an enormous challenge to orthopedic clinicians and practitioners especially in countries with fewer resources. Fortunately, the vast majority of these injuries is low energy and can be treated successfully with closed methods of splinting or plaster of Paris (POP). However, malalignment or mismanagement of these fractures could result in pain, stiffness, or deformity, leading to severe functional disability. In LICss, many of these injuries will present in a delayed fashion with significant swelling.
The webinar aims to help participants: recognize that nonoperative treatment of ankle fractures requires close follow-up to identify loss of reduction; clearly communicate with patients and their family the treatment plan, expectations and possible referral; describe and apply appropriate nonoperative and operative treatment of ankle fractures; and understand the pitfalls of syndesmotic injuries and their potential to lead to poor outcomes.
Two AOAF orthopedic trauma surgeons, with extensive knowledge of and expertise in such injuries, OFG Kibria (Bangladesh) and Leonard Banza (Malawi), will present and moderate the webinar.
Participants will be able to chat and ask questions in real time and get immediate feedback.
The webinar will take place on Monday, 24 October 2016; from 13:00-14:00 (Central European Time/GMT +1:00). It will be repeated in French from 16:00-17:00 (Check your local time here.) .
