AO Alliance faculty sign up for marathon in Kigali to raise funds for courses

AO Alliance is very excited to announce that a team of our faculty is participating in the Kigali International Peace Marathon on June 16th in Rwanda to raise CHF 50,000 to train healthcare workers in Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Both countries are recovering from civil wars and the Ebola outbreak, which were devastating. But more devastating than infectious diseases is the silent epidemic of injuries which kills 30% more people worldwide than HIV/AIDS, malaria and TB combined, and is spreading rapidly across low-income countries such AO Alliance is very excited to announce that a team of our faculty is participating in the Kigali International Peace Marathon on June 16th in Rwanda to raise CHF 50,000 to train healthcare workers in Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Both countries are recovering from civil wars and the Ebola outbreak, which were devastating. But more devastating than infectious diseases is the silent epidemic of injuries which kills 30% more people worldwide than HIV/AIDS, malaria and TB combined, and is spreading rapidly across low-income countries such as Sierra Leone and Liberia. Both countries have only one national trauma and orthopedic surgeon each. This situation requires urgent action to train a variety of healthcare workers who treat injured patients.

The aim of the two projects is to deliver intensive and comprehensive training on the principles of nonoperative fracture management to 80 healthcare workers, to save lives and to ensure the best outcomes for the injured.

Our marathon team, led by Dr Jim Harrison (UK), is made up of Dr Emmanuel Bukara (Rwanda), Dr Nicholas Lubega (Malawi), Dr Joseph Mwanga (Tanzania) as well as some of Jim’s family and friends from the UK who want to support us.

Funds raised will cover course materials, venue hire, accommodation, and travel for all participants and regional faculty.

Please join the AO Alliance marathon team in their efforts to deliver fracture care education to two of the world’s poorest countries and help spread the word.
