Envisioning better fracture care

In the recently released second annual report, we highlight our achievements in continuing to advance fracture care in low-income countries (LICs).

In Malawi, we provided training and education through our Focused Nonoperative Fracture Course for Orthopedic Clinical Officers (OCOs), which attracted over 120 OCOs. The AO Alliance also arranged trauma and orthopedics (T&O) training for operating room nurses through four hospital visits across the country.

Facing the shortage of T&O surgeons in Malawi, we were inspired to organize the AO Alliance Open Day to attract young doctors in training to specialize in the field. Six young doctors showed a keen interest and we will assist them in realizing their ambitions.

The AO Alliance collaborated with the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS) to launch a US$1.5 million project funded by the UBS Optimus Foundation, to improve fracture care for children in Ghana.

The AO Alliance partnered with Australian Doctors for Africa (ADFA) to conduct a training course in basic orthopedic trauma principles and surgical skills for 48 first-year trainees at the Black Lion Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

This year we also partnered with Sesame Workshop to launch “Play Safe with Sisimpur” in Bangladesh. The 24-month project aims to improve children’s knowledge, attitudes and behaviors relating to accident and injury prevention, and reducing preventable traumatic childhood injuries.
