Nurses from all over Asia convened in Vietnam to train to become faculty

06 March 2019

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. November 21-25, 2018. Over 15 operating room personnel (ORP) from several countries in Asia, including Cambodia, Nepal, Myanmar, etc., gathered in Ho Chi Minh City, commonly known as Saigon, to learn various teaching methods to transmit their knowledge effectively and impactfully.

The Faculty Education Training took place over the course of two days, and was led by Dr Hieu Nguyen, National Course chair, and educators Dr Dhaval Desai from India, and Susanne Bauerle from Switzerland.

The very animated event was broken down into three segments: interactive lectures fostering active participation and encouraging the trainees to come up with their own ideas; and practical exercises where they gave live presentations, followed by peer-to-peer feedback sessions.

But this was only the beginning for these trainees, as they had to put into practice their newly acquired skills by teaching the Basic Principles of Fracture Management for ORPs course, under the guidance of Dr Hieu and Ms Bauerle.

On November 23-25, over 40 participants from Vietnam attended the course, undeterred by Tropical Storm Usagi. In a first for AO Alliance educational events of this kind, lectures were presented onscreen in both English and Vietnamese.

The participants learned best practices in the operating room, from applying surgical gowns and gloves to sterilization and handling of instrument boxes.
