Reporting on Trauma workshop in Ghana a huge success

06 March 2019

November 2018. A group of over 30 reporters and journalists from southern Ghana convened in Koforidua, Ghana to attend a two-day workshop on Reporting on Trauma and Pediatric Fractures.

The event was initiated by the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons as part of the Pediatric Fracture Solutions for Ghana project, with support from AMMREN Ghana and AO Alliance.

This was the first such workshop organized to educate journalists on trauma and how to report on pediatric fractures in Ghana. The aim was to use the media to effectively create awareness on childhood fractures from the perspective of both the formal health sector and the influence of bonesetters in managing pediatric fractures

Topics discussed included management and treatment of fractures by medical personnel and bonesetters, ethics in clinical research and ethical journalism, among others. The workshop also included role playing exercises for reporting on fractures using radio interviews in both the local language and English. An action plan was crafted to guide them on the various processes to follow so that they may become ambassadors of pediatric fracture reporting in the their various media houses.
