Statement from AO Alliance Board Chair and Managing Director on COVID-19
16 March 2020
Each year, AO Alliance looks forward to hosting our community, participants and employees from around the world at our AO Alliance courses and seminars, and through our fellowships to advance the care of the injured in low- and middle-income countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.
AO Alliance has been carefully monitoring the global situation relating to COVID-19, and the potential impact on our events has changed significantly over the past few days, making it difficult to assess and mitigate any risks.
For AO Alliance, the well-being of our community is paramount, and any decisions regarding our education events prioritize the health and safety of our faculty, partners and staff.
That is why we have decided to suspend all scheduled AO Alliance face-to-face education events and AO Alliance fellowships from now until April 30, 2020. This is valid for all activities in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. This also affects all governance and operational face-to-face meetings. We cannot currently confirm what will happen to the postponed events.
This decision was not taken lightly. We evaluated the situation from a variety of standpoints: the health and well-being of all participants, travel disruption, the current situation in various countries, and the ability to forecast COVID-19’s potential impact on the regions, and globally, for the coming months.
We understand that this is a disappointment. It goes without saying that this is an incredibly fluid and dynamic situation. We have been and are committed to being responsible, thoughtful and transparent with our decision-making process.
If you have questions or concerns, please contact us directly at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will be happy to answer you.
We thank you in advance for your understanding.
Chair of the AO Alliance Board of Directors
Dr Claude Martin jr.
