Communicable diseases often dominate global and national health agendas, attracting a lot of attention and funding. Injuries, despite causing 30% more deaths than HIV, malaria and TB worldwide, receive little attention and scarce funding. Our awareness efforts aim to elevate injury-related death and disability on both global and national health agendas.
The AO Alliance has joint activities with international organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Global Alliance for Care of the Injured (GACI), the Global Alliance for Surgical, Obstetric, Trauma and Anaesthesia Care (G4 Alliance) and the Coalition for Dialogue on Africa (CoDA), to name a few.
Efforts to advance care of the injured in LMICs must go hand-in-hand with existing national policies on injury care and prevention. Where injury is absent from national health agendas, the AO Alliance offers policy advisory services to national health authorities for the crafting of trauma plans and tailored clinical guidelines. Our policy advisory services serve to strengthen capacity in planning and delivery of trauma care critical to coordinated action.
