Another fruitful weekend has passed, this time in Lusaka, Zambia, where the Faculty Education Program (FEP) took place on June 8-9, 2019. More commonly known as a train-the-trainer course, the event drew 17 surgeons and two operating room nurses from 10 countries in English-speaking Africa, including Zambia.
The FEP was created by the AO Education Institute to improve the skills and expertise of faculty using the seven AO principles of education: relevance, needs based, interactivity, motivation, providing feedback, promoting reflection, and leading to verifiable outcomes.
The animated event brought to life various teaching methods aimed at inspiring and keeping learners interested, as well as managing difficult situations. Whilst the event itself was short, a lot of preparation was required by the participants in the five weeks leading up to the course. By the end of this intensive training, the participants walked away with new teaching skills and tips for giving great lectures, facilitating small group discussions and running practical exercises.

The event was organized by our Regional Faculty, Dr Jonathan Sitali, and led by AO Alliance’s Managing Director, Dr Claude Martin jr, and Dr Ashraf Moharram from Egypt, as well as AO Foundation educator Carola Hontzsch.
