AO Alliance – AO CMF Study Club launched in Ghana

02 May 2022

On 4 March 2022, the first session of the new AO Alliance ”“ AO CMF Study Club was launched in Kumasi, Ghana, with the aim of encouraging craniomaxillofacial (CMF) surgeons in low resource settings to network with peers and discuss the latest treatment approaches in CMF surgery. The program is the result of a collaboration between both entities and is based on the existing AO CMF Study Club.

This first event, on “Condylar Fractures: Controversies and Practice,” attracted 40 consultants and residents in CMF surgery from Ghana. Lectures given remotely by international expert surgeons from AO CMF ”“ Drs Nicholas Homsi (Brazil), Amir El Barbary (Egypt), Gregorio Sanchez Aniceto (Spain), and Mohamed Hazem (Egypt) ”“ were followed by a live discussion on challenging clinical cases.

Both faculty and participants were enthusiastic and appreciative about the opportunity to share and acquire knowledge.

“I gained knowledge which has already influenced my practice. Difficult issues were presented in a precise and concise manner. Learning from the practical experience of participants and faculty from various parts of the country and the world made this event unique,” said Nana T. A. Gyimah, a participant.

Dr Solomon Obiri-Yeboah, who organized and chaired the study club, emphasized that it was essential to help local CMF surgeons and residents to consolidate their knowledge. He thanked the local organizing committee for doing an excellent job and concluded: “Together we can do more.”

The next session of the Study Club in Ghana is planned for May 11 on “Management of Zygomatic Complex Fractures”. The program will be expanded to other countries soon.
