Equipment for trauma and orthopedic care delivered to two hospitals in Malawi

As part of the Malawi country initiative, much-needed equipment has been donated by the AO Alliance to Kamuzu Central Hospital and Mzuzu Central Hospital at the beginning of the year to facilitate the treatment of trauma and orthopedic (T&O) patients.

As we have seen happening across the globe since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, medical resources have been diverted from various clinical departments to COVID units. With the fight against the pandemic in Malawi absorbing public health funds that are meant for trauma care, the AO Alliance contribution will help to ensure the continuation of healthcare services to the injured and patients suffering from musculoskeletal disabilities.

IT equipment that had been lacking was part of the donation: desktop computers for the display of x-rays in operating theatres and large LED x-ray monitors. Locally made skeletal traction weights, traction frames, surgical equipment/instrument trolleys, implants, reusable surgical gowns, drapes, and masks were also part of the donated items supplied to the hospitals.

“The equipment is revitalizing the lives of the injured while everyone else is focusing their programs on infectious diseases” ”“ Dr Boston Munthali, Mzuzu Central Hospital
