GCPS Rector in Ghana succumbs to COVID-19

From the Managing Director of the AO Alliance

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of Prof. Jacob Plange-Rhule, Rector of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS), on Friday April 10, 2020. He was being treated for the COVID-19 disease at the University of Ghana Medical Centre.

Prof. Jacob, as I liked to call him, was a dear friend of the AO Alliance. He was instrumental in the implementation of many of our programs, as chair of our steering committee in Ghana: Pediatric Fracture Solutions for Ghana, the new plaster technicians’ school, and the accreditation of Cape Coast and Tamale trauma and orthopedics residency programs, to name a few.

I always looked forward to my trips to Accra to meet with Jacob and his team at the College. His honesty, clear communication, relentless energy and permanent genuine smile grew on you. He was truly a scholar and a gentleman.

The AO Alliance has lost a true friend who will be sorely missed by all who knew him. A visionary and a leader that helped make a difference in the care of the injured in Ghana. A man who made me see that with a little help from your friends, all is possible.

On behalf of the AO Alliance, I extend my deepest, heartfelt sympathies to his family.
