Peter Matter (1932-2026)
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Peter Matter on April 22, 2026.
Matter was a Swiss surgeon who played a foundational role in the development of modern orthopedic trauma care and was among the key figures behind the AO Alliance.
Matter was closely associated with the origins and growth of the AO Foundation, an organization that has shaped the global standard for fracture treatment. He was also one of the founding fathers of the AO Alliance, which focuses on improving fracture care in low- and middle-income countries in Africa and Asia.
Born in 1932, Matter studied medicine at the University of Zurich, where he also earned his doctorate in 1958. Early in his career, he worked as a young surgeon at Kantonsspital Chur, receiving training in general surgery under Martin Allgöwer. It was there that he was first introduced to the principles of osteosynthesis. Allgöwer was among the group of Swiss surgeons who founded the AO in 1958, pioneering internal fixation methods for bone fractures.
Matter participated in the inaugural AO Davos Course in 1960 as an assistant. He served as President of AO International from 1993 to 1999, at a time when it functioned as the AO’s central educational body. He later became President of the AO Foundation from 2000 to 2002.
Matter’s contributions extended beyond leadership roles. Through his involvement in education, research, and organizational development, he helped promote the dissemination of standardized fracture care practices across continents.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, two sons and two daughters, and several grandchildren.
