Surgeons gather in Dhaka for special seminar on tendon and nerve injuries

For the first time, AO Alliance has organized a half-day seminar on a special topic in Bangladesh. With the guidance of Dr. Kibria, seminar Chair, the seminar on tendon and nerve injuries took place on March 6, 2018 in Dhaka.

As injuries to hands, tendons, nerves and the brachial plexus are commonly associated with long bone fractures, Dr. Kibria specifically chose this topic for the event. In his experience, orthopedic surgeons tend to engage more in long bone fracture treatments, leaving hand and nerve injuries neglected.

Over 60 orthopedic, general, and plastic surgeons from Dhaka and across Bangladesh participated in the event. The course content included the principles of hand injury treatment, fixation of bones of the hand, wound coverage for skin loss in hand injuries, the principles of tendon and nerve injuries, and brachial plexus injuries.

By the end of the seminar, the surgeons were able to outline the importance of tendon and nerve injuries, and to plan appropriate management for both. They were also taught to make use of professional networks to share ideas, challenge poor practices and provide support to other surgeons.

The positive feedback from the participants shows real interest and need to provide more courses on the principles of management of these types of injuries.
